Allied Health Assistants: Supporting Your Child’s Journey

At Little Village Therapy, our Occupational Therapy Allied Health Assistants (OT AHAs) provide hands-on support to children and families, working closely with our occupational therapists to implement therapy programs.

What We Do as Occupational Therapy Allied Health Assistants

As Occupational Therapy Allied Health Assistants (OT AHAs) at Little Village Therapy, our role is to support the work of occupational therapists by providing hands-on, practical assistance to children and families. We help implement therapy programs, assist with exercises, and facilitate activities that enhance your child’s skills and development in everyday tasks.

We work alongside our qualified occupational therapists to ensure your child’s therapy is consistent, engaging, and effective. Our goal is to help children gain confidence and independence by reinforcing the therapeutic goals set by our team, all while making the process fun and rewarding!

Who We Can Help

Our support is beneficial for children who may be struggling with a range of challenges, including:

  • Sensory Processing Difficulties (e.g., sensitivity to light, sound, or touch, difficulty with transitions or emotional regulation)

  • Motor Skills Delays (e.g., trouble with fine motor tasks like writing, drawing, or using utensils, or gross motor difficulties like coordination and balance)

  • Social & Emotional Skills (e.g., difficulties with making friends, understanding social cues, or managing emotions)

  • Developmental Delays (e.g., delays in speech, physical skills, or cognitive development)

  • Focus and Attention Challenges (e.g., struggling to stay on task, focus in school, or complete activities independently)

We work with children of all ages, from toddlers to school-aged kids, who may need extra support in building the skills they need for everyday activities like schoolwork, play, and self-care.

Why Your Child Might Need Us

Your child may need our help if they:

  • Struggle with everyday tasks like dressing themselves, using a pencil, or eating with utensils.

  • Find it hard to focus or stay organized at home, school, or during therapy.

  • Have sensory sensitivities and struggle with overwhelming feelings around certain noises, textures, or lights.

  • Experience social or emotional challenges, such as trouble making friends or managing frustration.

  • Need additional support to meet the goals set by their therapist, ensuring therapy is applied consistently at home, school, and in the community.

Our role as allied health assistants is to provide the extra hands and consistent reinforcement that your child needs to make progress—while making sure therapy is fun and engaging.

How We Work With You

Personalised Sessions

Each session is tailored to your child’s needs. As AHAs, we are trained to observe your child’s progress, encourage them, and adjust activities to make sure they remain engaging and effective. Our role is to ensure your child feels supported throughout the therapy process.

Collaborative Therapy Support

After an initial assessment with our lead occupational therapist, we help implement the treatment plan by carrying out specific activities designed to address your child’s goals. These might include fine motor exercises, sensory activities, social play scenarios, or emotional regulation techniques.

Parent and Caregiver Involvement

We involve parents and caregivers in the process, offering practical suggestions and activities to try at home. This helps reinforce therapy goals and provides a sense of consistency, which is key to your child’s success.

Regular Feedback and Updates

We provide regular updates to you and the occupational therapist about your child’s progress. This allows us to modify activities as needed, ensuring we’re always working towards the goals that matter most to your child.

Fun & Play-Based Activities

Therapy doesn’t have to feel like “work”! We use play-based activities to make learning feel like fun. Whether it’s sensory exploration, motor skill games, or social interaction exercises, we ensure that every session is engaging and something your child looks forward to.

Why Choose an Occupational Therapy Allied Health Assistant?

  • Increased Consistency: Having an AHAs involved in your child’s therapy ensures that skills are practiced regularly, leading to faster progress.

  • Hands-On Support: We provide practical, one-on-one help that complements the work done by your occupational therapist, allowing for greater focus on your child’s individual needs.

  • Engagement & Fun: Our therapy sessions are designed to be enjoyable, keeping your child motivated and excited to participate.

  • Personalised Approach: We work closely with the therapy team and your family to ensure therapy is adapted to your child’s unique needs and strengths.

  • Ongoing Collaboration: As part of the therapy team, we maintain open communication with you and the therapist to ensure that we’re meeting your child’s goals effectively

At Little Village Therapy, we believe every child deserves to feel confident, independent, and successful. As your Occupational Therapy Allied Health Assistant, we’re here to make that happen, one playful step at a time!
